WikiPics is a Chrome and Safari extension that improves your Wikipedia experience, giving you fast and convenient ways to navigate pictures and photos on Wikipedia articles. Pictures will open in large sizes and you’ll be able to navigate quickly with your mouse or keyboard. Have a look at these examples:

  Version 2.0 — Feature release, 2011-05-27

  • WikiPics 2.0 brings about a fresh interface along with the following changes:
  • Faster and better scrolling. Faster page load. Less memory usage.
  • A less obtrusive interface via static buttons that never moves and more space for pictures.
  • No more Fancybox, while it has served well, the overhead was not worth it.
  • No more included images, all graphics except the icon are generated with CSS3.
  • jQuery updated to version 1.6.1 with some speed improvements.

  Version 1.3.2 — Feature release, 2011-04-02

  • New feature: WikiPics now presents a small Enlarge image link when hovering over images, this link will take you to the classic intermediate page. As usual, this link is also present in the title text in the lightbox.
  • SVG images are now requested at a size that is relative to the browser window, no more choosing a kind of works for all, works for some solutions where unnecessarily small images would be downloaded for those with large screens and unnecessarily large images would be downloaded for those with small.
  • Some edge cases where titles would be nested very far away (up to six layers of HTML tags) are now detected.
  • jQuery updated to version 1.5.2.

  Version 1.3.1 — Bugfix, 2011-03-27

  • This version brings parity between the Safari and Chrome versions, updates the bundled jQuery in Chrome to 1.5.1 for minor bug fixes and minor speed improvements.
  • SVG recognition has been improved.
  • Unnecessary console messages has been removed.

  Version 1.3 — Feature release, 2011-03-18

  • Title text now contains the HTML from the article, meaning that links and formatting is being preserved.
  • jQuery updated to version 1.5.1 for some performance improvements, especially during page load.

  • Fix for bug introduced by OGG files on certain pages on Wikipedia.

  Version 1.0 — Stable, 2011-01-10

  • Tweaked text, icon, version number and submission at the Google Web store are news for this version. All else remain unvhanged.
  • This is the first stable release of WikiLeaks, there are no known bugs, but please submit any you find.

  Version 0.10 — Release Candidate, 2011-01-08

  • New: Option to return to the position where you started browsing images in the Wikipedia page.
  • Minor optimizations
  • SVG files are now handled propery. This is done by requesting a PNG version of the image, currently set at 900px width.
  • Now respects middle clicks, option/meta clicks and control clicks.
  • This is a release candidate, there are no known bugs but final testing is needed to confirm stability and usability.
